The major components of fitness are cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and flexibility training. Our degreed exercise physiologists will write you an individualized exercise prescription ensuring all three major components are worked in, at your level. It is important to us that you have a well-balanced exercise plan designed specifically to help you reach your goals.

Turf Work

Our brand new Turf area is open!

This functional training space has it all: you can catch a Turf Work class, do your own routine or follow along with our Workout of the Week.

Why Turf? Working out on artificial grass is better for shock absorption and energy return which is much easier on your joints.

Stacked with the latest & greatest equipment, The Turf has a perfect blend of cardio and strength options for all levels and ages.

If you’re looking to increase your cardiovascular endurance, try out the Jacob’s Ladder, pushing our weight loaded sled or run agility drills with our cones & hurdles.

If you’re looking to get stronger, alongside our Cable Cross machine we have a variety of kettlebells and dumbbells located directly on the turf, making it easy for you to hit your fitness goals.

Our Turf Work classes are run by our team of degreed Exercise Physiologists. You can expect different class formats each week – be prepared to sweat and leave class with a smile on your face!

Cardiovascular Exercise:

Also known as aerobic exercise, cardiovascular exercise is the ability of your body to take in, transport, and use oxygen while exercising. Cardiovascular fitness is inextricably linked with health. It is your heart, lungs, blood, and muscles working together in concert. The exercise physiologists at DHAC further describe this as any large muscle group movement that is dynamic in motion lasting 5 minutes or longer. A few examples would be walking, running, rowing, riding a bike, or swimming. With a myriad of machines to choose from in our fitness center, we will help you find the one (or few!) that is right for you!

Strength Training

Strength training, also referred to as resistance training or weight lifting, is an essential part of your exercise prescription. Strength training is an anaerobic form of exercise designed to strengthen your muscles and bones. This can be done using your body weight, free weights i.e. dumbbells and barbells, or with selectorized pin equipment. Strength training is a crucial component of your exercise routine because it will help you maintain the ability to perform your ADL (activities of daily living) and helps to protect your body from injury. Stronger muscles will also boost your metabolism, which means you will burn calories at a faster rate (even when your body is at rest!) Our DHAC exercise physiologists have the experience, knowledge, and tools within our fitness center to prescribe a strength training program that is just right for you. We will work with you one on one to be sure the program is not only one you need, but one you enjoy!

Flexibility Training

Flexibility is the ability of a joint (or multiple joints) to move through an unrestricted, pain free range of motion. Although flexibility training is often overlooked because it isn’t going to build muscle or burn calories like strength and cardio will, it is an important component of fitness that is essential to you being able to have the joint mobility and range of motion to perform the other exercises in your program as well as your ADL’s.

A common myth is that you should stretch before you do your fitness program. This is not true. A light warmup before stretching will increase your blood flow, and essentially your range of motion. The DHAC fitness center has a wide array of body weight stretching guidelines as well as some stretch machines, apparatuses, and tools to help foster your joint mobility. Our exercise physiologists will guide you through the exercises that will be best for your body’s abilities, capabilities, and needs.
